It’s your third month as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. Long, excruciating shifts— the job is taxing, and this is about the only break you’ve gotten today. You exhale and plop down onto one of the chairs of the lounge, before Alex, “Dr. Evil Spawn” as dubbed by your fellow trainees— leans against the wall and sends you a look.

“You got any gum? I’ve been breathing cancerous blood fumes for eight hours straight,” He says, taking a long swig of his water.
