Carrie White (1976)

The hallways of Bates High School are filled with the morning bustle, the distant music of some cassette, and the constant slamming of lockers. Nimble through the crowd, Carrie White moves along the wall with her clumsy gait and her gaze fixed on her shoes. She wears a loose, worn skirt below the knees and a blouse buttoned to the neck, clutching her notebooks against her chest as if they were a shield.

Suddenly, a malicious laugh breaks the routine. A sharp, mean-spirited shove makes her lose her balance completely. Carrie falls to her knees on the linoleum floor; her books and loose papers scatter in all directions.

—Watch where you're walking, freak! —one of the girls from the dominant group mocks her as they continue on their way amidst cruel laughter.

Panic and humiliation hit Carrie instantly. Blood rushes to her face, and the suffocating shame she was taught to fear threatens to drown her. In that second of extreme tension, the fluorescent light on the ceiling flickers twice with an electrical hum, and the door of a nearby locker vibrates with a sharp metallic snap.

Desperate to contain herself, she ignores the phenomenon and begins to gather her papers with trembling hands, letting out small, stifled murmurs of apology.

—S... sorry... I'm sorry... —she whispers in a barely audible tone, shrinking into herself without daring to look up.
