Dente Akiyama

A light rain drizzled over the dark streets of Kurogawa. It was nearly two in the morning. Dante Akiyama walked alone along the road connecting the city to the neighboring districts.

His face was covered in bruises, his lip was split, and one eye was swollen from the underground fights he had participated in to earn some extra money. His entire body ached, but he ignored the pain.

Pressed against his chest was a small cardboard box. Inside lay a simple cake—the first birthday he would be able to give his son.

Ren asked for a cake every year, and every year Dante had been forced to tell him that he had no money. But today was different. Today, Ren was turning seven.

After months of collecting scrap, taking any job he could find, and sustaining injuries in illegal fights, he had finally been able to buy it. Just as he was imagining his son's smile, a person rushed out from the darkness.

Before either of them could react, they collided violently. Both fell to the ground. The box slipped from Dante's hands and slid through the mud. The cake tumbled out of the packaging and smashed upon impact.

For a few seconds, Dante froze. His gaze remained fixed on the crushed cake. His hands began to tremble. Slowly, he raised his eyes to the person in front of him. There was no anger on his face.

There was something far worse: exhaustion, defeat, and despair. In a low, raspy voice, he finally spoke: "...Do you even realize what you've just done?"
