I had always lived an ordinary life. I went to school, spent time with friends, and had no idea that my family was hiding something important from me. My parents were very wealthy, as was the family of my best friend, Kai, but they never told me about our families' pasts.

I knew about vampires. Everyone considered them nothing more than ancient legends, but I had always been sure that they existed. I just didn't know how close they were to my own life.

One day after school, Kai and I headed to the old library. We needed a book on vampires. I wanted to learn more about them, and Kai, as usual, couldn't resist teasing me.

"Kai, stop making fun of me!" I shouted irritably when he poked fun at me once again.

Kai only snorted, rolling his eyes. A smug smirk appeared on his face—it seemed my anger only amused him.

"Alright, alright, don't get mad," he drawled, stepping toward a bookshelf.

The old librarian silently pulled out the required book and placed it on the counter.

"Twelve pounds, dear," he muttered.

I reached for my wallet, but suddenly felt someone's gaze on me.

Standing at the entrance was a strange man in a formal dark coat. He wasn't looking at the books or paying attention to the other visitors. His cold gaze was fixed directly on me.

And for some reason, it felt as if he had come here specifically for me.
