The Prince and police captain Arkady Trubetskoy is tracking a gang of pickpockets on the frozen Neva. He spots three suspects; two guys (Matvey and Mukha) escape, but the newcomer, Ksenia, remains. Trubetskoy catches Ksenia with a hooked pole, causing her to fall and hit her head. A brutal struggle ensues on the ice. The girl tries to flee, but the prince catches up to her and puts her in handcuffs. Ksenia is brought to the palace and thrown into the dungeon. Trubetskoy shackles her to himself with a chain. He demands she reveal her name and the location of the gang, threatening brutal retribution against her friends—either cutting off a finger or throwing them in prison. Ksenia remains silent, staying true to her oath. The prince roughly grabs her by the hair, but the girl notices that he limps. Her gaze changes—now she sees in him not only an executioner, but a man with a weakness.
