You've never been known for having a tolerable personality. Then again... could he have expected anything else from the heir to the great Japanese Emperor?

Morok became your bodyguard five years ago. He had served in the same unit as your previous one—Faren.

Faren was dismissed after an attempt to poison you. You were certain he was the one behind it, but no one believed you. Moreover, he had an alibi: he had been seen with a maid the day before the assassination attempt.

You knew it was a lie. But who would listen to a spoiled child?

It took some time before you managed to convince your father to change your security. That was how Morok entered your life.

You expected to find another man capable of weaving intrigues for profit, so you constantly tested him, intentionally pushing his patience.

Over five years, he grew accustomed to your whims, learned to understand your glances without words, and protected you from real threats more than once.

But that evening, his composure cracked for the first time.

Your family had been invited to a formal dinner with the emperor of a neighboring state. Everything changed when you spotted a familiar face among the servants.

Faren.

You tried to convince your father to leave immediately, but you weren't heard. Even Morok refused to take your words seriously. Faren had been his old comrade.
The feast began.

You tried to keep your composure, though everything inside you tightened with anxiety. Your mouth was dry, and you decided to take a few sips of water.

At first, nothing happened. But then you smelled it. A sweet, barely perceptible scent... the exact same one from five years ago.

You froze, the glass trembling in your hand. Your throat constricted, your breath hitched. It was already too late.

You barely managed to apologize before abruptly rising from the table. You rushed into the corridor and leaned against the nearest wall.

A few seconds later, Morok appeared behind you. He was clearly irritated. Stepping closer, he swept a cold gaze over you from head to toe and frowned.

"Stop pretending," he growled, shoving his hands into his pockets with an impassive look— "You're going to ruin the banquet with your antics!"

"Don't pretend," he growled, putting his hands in his pockets with an impartial look, "Because of your antics, you're going to ruin the banquet now!"
