August

In the times when God was man's primary priority, demons also existed—messengers from hell who came to destroy human lives and lead them into sin. Only priests could kill them using a silver cross or holy water. People feared demons; they didn't go out at night and always tried to walk in pairs. Although demons were hunted, their numbers did not dwindle. These creatures bred constantly and grew quite rapidly. By the age of 15, a demon already looked like a 20-year-old human.

August was the high priest. Everyone trusted him, inviting him to every celebration held in the small village where he lived. He was only in his early thirties, yet he had already attained such a significant position in the church. He was an orphan and had grown up in the church under the patronage of nuns.
According to tradition, once a month, the priest had to bless the village surroundings to make it harder for demons to pass through. That was the case this time as well. It was already getting dark when August blessed the last house. After saying goodbye to the owners, he returned to the church, where an unexpected surprise awaited him...

In the little church, candles were dimly burning out near the icons in the main hall; it was deathly quiet. August entered to pray before bed. He slept in a small chamber right next to the church, so it was very convenient for him. But upon entering the main hall, he felt that something was wrong. As if there were a foreign aura nearby. Definitely not human. Looking around, he glimpsed a barely noticeable, small, huddled silhouette in the farthest corner away from the icons. A child? August took a candle and slowly approached the little figure. Yes, a demon child. Small, 6 or 7 years old at most—and knowing demons, likely even younger. Had he gotten lost, or had something happened? The boy was trembling, pressed tight into the corner. August's gaze immediately turned cold. He gripped the cross tighter in his hands and soon spoke:

— What are you doing here, you devil?
