Plot
After the battle for Bunker D-6, the protagonist, Artyom, leaves the Spartan Order and marries Anna, the daughter of Colonel Melnik. Artyom is obsessed with finding life beyond the Moscow metro. Back in Metro 2033, he heard someone's radio transmissions and was convinced that people could survive outside the capital, too.

During one of his forays to the surface, Artyom encounters a pack of guards and is seriously wounded. He is rescued by Sparta squad members and taken to VDNKh. Subsequent events reveal that the Russian government was not completely destroyed during the war, but its remnants have set up a radio jamming system to prevent metro residents from learning of the existence of other survivors.

The Aurora crew faces new dangers in various regions of post-apocalyptic Russia and Kazakhstan:
Volga. The squad encounters a sect of "technofighters" who worship the Tsar-Fish.
Yamantau. The heroes try to find refuge in a government bunker, but discover its inhabitants are cannibals posing as high command.
Caspian. The crew travels to the Caspian-1 communications center, where they encounter slave owners—former oil workers led by the cruel Baron, who has founded a fire cult.
Novosibirsk. A radiation-contaminated city where the heroes arrive in winter.

Prince. One of the youngest fighters aboard the Aurora. Recently promoted to Scout Ranger, he's always willing to risk everything to complete a mission.

Alyosha. Joined the Spartan Rangers after several years of service with the Polis Rangers. A seasoned scout and survival expert in harsh conditions. He's thrilled with the Aurora voyage itself. He's always joking about Amazon women and women, saying he'll find himself some Amazon woman or another and marry her, because in the metro, a woman was supposed to be a breadwinner, not a suicide bomber.

Other significant characters
Katya. Stepan's wife, Nastya's mother.
Nastya. Ekaterina's daughter, whom Silantiy kept locked up with her mother. Despite her ordeal, she hasn't lost her ability to appreciate the beauty of the world and shows compassion even for mutants.
Silantiy. Leader of the "Church of the Water King" cult. He preaches hatred of technology (especially electronics), using electromagnetic anomalies for "punishments."
Krest. The mechanic who gave Nastya the flashlight. He doesn't have the same training as the other crew members, but he knows how to handle a machine gun and survived on the surface on his own.

Artyom, the protagonist. Born in Moscow shortly before the nuclear war, he spent his entire life in the metro, but often ventured above ground. His goal is to find life beyond the tunnels and establish contact with the outside world.

Melnik (Svyatoslav Konstantinovich Melnikov). Colonel of the Sparta Order, detachment commander on the Aurora. Former KGB/FSB officer (Vympel special forces unit). He was seriously wounded in the battle for D-6, but received metal prosthetics. For him, the success of the mission comes first, but he also cares for his subordinates, whom he considers family.

Stepan. A heavy weapons specialist, one of Aurora's most experienced fighters. Despite his menacing appearance, he's a kindhearted romantic at heart, always ready to help those in need.

Sam. Melnik's personal bodyguard. A former U.S. Marine, before the apocalypse, he worked as a security guard at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. He's known for his inexhaustible optimism and excellent combat skills. He's a jokester, loves to drink, and is always up for any action. He has a strong accent.
Damir, a Ranger of the Order, originally from Kazakhstan. He feels like an outsider among his comrades, but is loyal to the squad and Melnik. As a medic, he cares for the wounded, and hopes to find his loved ones during his journey.

Idiot. He chose the nickname himself. In reality, he's one of the smartest members of the crew. He often despairs over the meaninglessness of life and the wars between people, acting as the chief philosopher on board the Aurora. He believes that everything must be carefully weighed before resorting to force.

Yermak. In a previous life, he was a subway train driver. One of the few subway workers to survive the war.
