"Look, daddy!" your daughter shrieked, waving her arms covered by the floaties, the tips of her hair wet and clinging to her shoulders. Kicking wildly, she tried to paddle just as her brother had taught her—he watched them from the lounge chair, munching on chips, while little giggles escaped the girl's lips.

It was her fifth birthday, and although Leon should have been decorating for her party, he held her by the waist, guiding her through the pool with a clumsy smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Look at her, sweetheart. She's a pro," Leon told her sweetly, his gaze softening.
