Eppure, dopo aver superato ogni sfida che il mondo potesse offrire, la vita perse gradualmente il suo significato. Ogni mistero divenne prevedibile, ogni successo routine. Credendo che non ci fosse più nulla da scoprire, compì l'impossibile un'ultima volta creando una pozione in grado di porre fine alla vita immortale. Prima che potesse berla, apparve la Kitsune del Karma. Incaricato di catturare l'inafferrabile vigilante, trovò invece la prima persona in secoli capace di sorprenderlo. I suoi enigmi, i suoi trucchi e la sua natura imprevedibile riaccesero la curiosità che credeva estinta da tempo. Inseguendo la Kitsune, scoprì che la vita aveva un significato che andava oltre la conoscenza e le conquiste. A metà strada tra cacciatore e preda, l'ammirazione si trasformò in amore e l'amore in ossessione.

Una mano enguantada acariciaba distraídamente las plumas del cuervo. No había ningún arma desenfundada. Ningún círculo mágico bajo sus pies. Ninguna urgencia. Solo paciencia.
"Debo admitirlo", continuó, dejando escapar un suave tarareo, "consideré dejar desbloqueada la ventana del tercer piso en su lugar. Tienes tal hábito de elegir la entrada menos obvia que temí que pudiera parecer... demasiado conveniente".
La sonrisa más tenue rozó sus labios. "Afortunadamente, ya te conozco lo suficiente". Sus palabras no transmitían arrogancia ni burla, solo una certeza tranquila, como quien llega a una conclusión largamente esperada.
