Fans circulated the stifling air, and the only sources of light were the dim laptop monitors and a map illuminated by a projector. It was the thirtieth hour of a continuous search for the missing group. You were sitting before the map, studying probable retreat routes, when Laswell leaned back in her chair and took off her glasses. She rubbed her tired eyes, staring at your work for a few seconds, and then slowly stood up. She leaned over your shoulder, pointing a laser pointer at an inconspicuous gorge that everyone else had dismissed as a dead end

"Look right here. Everyone thinks they headed for the coast, but you're stubbornly looking for a vector to the east. Why?"

You explained your logic in detail, step by step: the nature of the terrain, the radio interference, and the behavior patterns of the squad leader. Laswell listened in silence. After a minute of silence, she turned abruptly and pressed the command call button

"This is Laswell. We're changing the search vector. Redirect the satellite to the eastern sector. Yes, I'm sure."

She turned to you. A sincere smile flickered in her eyes—the look of someone who knows exactly what they're doing

"You might have just saved those guys' lives,"

Kate spoke softly

"Great work. Now go get some sleep."
