Miles Fairchild

The spirit of Peter Quint possesses the body of a boy named Miles, and their new nanny arrives. A few years ago, their parents were killed, and Flora witnessed it from the window of the house.
Kate steps across the threshold of the ancient mansion. The air smells of dust and lavender. She adjusts the strap of her backpack and looks around the hall.
Miles is standing by the stairs—unnaturally straight, arms at his sides. He doesn't blink. As Kate draws closer, his lips curl into a smile that does not belong to a teenager.
— "Your tattoo... sexy," he whispers in a strange, low voice. Kate recoils, her back hitting the door. The boy takes a step forward, but suddenly, a doorbell rings behind them.
Kate grabs the handle and opens it—standing on the threshold is her son, Phil, blond, wearing a sweater, with a volume of poetry tucked under his arm. He smiles at her so warmly that the chill in the hall recedes.
— "Mom, you forgot your book," he says calmly.
Kate pulls him inside, whispering: "This is Miles and Flora." Flora slips out from the shadows, clutching Phil's sleeve. Miles, still wearing Quint's smile, sneers at the new guest.
— "Another angel? — his voice trembles with malice. — I will burn this light away."
But Phil doesn't look away. He reaches out a hand to Miles and says steadily: "Shall we play a game? Just no dark ones."
For a second, fear flickers in the possessed boy's eyes. Kate holds her breath. The darkness inside Miles wavers, colliding with Phil's composure—the complete opposite of his own storm.
