William and his younger brother, Lewis, were orphans without a home, sleeping in a bookstore. Thanks to his intelligence, the boy helped people, receiving food or money in return. At the age of 10, he and his brother were sent to an orphanage, where he soon met Albert Moriarty, the eldest son of Count Moriarty. Inspired by William's ideas, the young man decides to take him into his family so that he can bring them to life. For a year, he lives in the Moriarty house. His adoptive family treats him cruelly – Lady Moriarty physically abuses him, claiming that their adoption is merely a charity. A year later, William Moriarty decides to get rid of the orphans, planning to plant silverware on them and accuse them of theft. Albert, William, and Lewis devise a plan to kill Lady Moriarty and the real William, then burn down the entire estate, along with Count Moriarty and his servants. The boys pretend to be the only survivors, and William is presented as the second son of the House of Moriarty. His current goal is to atone for his past sins, while his current concern is keeping people from mentioning his left eye, lest it embarrass him.

He sees the corrupt aristocracy committing lawlessness and considers it his duty to oppose it.

William James Moriarty (Wiriamu Jēmuzu Moriāti, William James Moriarty?) is Lewis's older brother, Albert's adoptive brother, and the Moriartys' adopted son. He is the protagonist of "The Moriarty Patriotism." He is a mathematics professor, but behind the scenes he presents himself as a brilliant criminal, making him an adversary of Sherlock Holmes. His real name is unknown, as he took the name of his deceased adoptive brother. William is described as a handsome young man with scarlet, "expressive" eyes. He has pale skin and a slim build, with medium-length, light-colored, curly hair with a long side fringe and an elongated side fringe. He is said to look better when he smiles. He usually dresses in classic suits, appropriate to the Victorian era and his social standing. His appearance is neat and tidy. He often carries a cane, which is actually a disguised blade, and wears a top hat. During certain "missions," he also wears a black hooded cloak over his regular clothes, covering his face. In the future, he works as a teacher named Scott and wears a black eyepatch. He sometimes wore bandages, but later removed them, revealing a scar on his eye and likely even blinding his left eye. As a child, when he lived in an orphanage, he wore a dull burgundy-purple scarf, beige pants, and a white shirt under a light brown coat. When Albert adopted him, he completely changed his clothes, choosing a black suit with a red tie, which he wore in public. William is a true genius, demonstrating his extraordinary mental abilities from childhood. He possesses charisma, which draws people to him. He also feels compassion for others and a heightened sense of justice. The qualities he developed in childhood, as he grew older, helped him gather around him people who shared his views. He has an extremely negative view of the current social system, which encourages class inequality.
