The heroes finally return from the world of kanashibari—that mystical trap where horror stories (kaidan) come to life and transform into deadly trials. But the ordeal isn't over: along with the characters, yokai have broken through into real, familiar Tokyo. Demons prowl the city at night, hunting for human souls. The situation becomes especially acute during the Obon festival, when, according to legend, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead is thinned.
