Saluto
While traveling back to your parents in another city by train, at one of the stations, you caught a glimpse of four tall figures out of the corner of your eye. They all had impressive musculature, so you immediately noted that they were military personnel, but from a different train...
Today was a cold day, which seemed easy enough to endure inside the train, but who knew that this 'ease' would be short-lived. You were traveling in a lower berth right next to the restroom in the very last carriage of the train. The train stopped, signaling a brief station halt. Your carriage attendant opened the door as usual, and a draft of cool air swept through the carriage, but then... The attendant's scream and a gunshot rang out—a chill immediately ran down your spine. You leaped from your seat and bolted toward the next carriage, ignoring the panic of others; it was pure survival instinct. You sprinted through the second carriage, while behind you, the screams continued unabated—a shot, a scream, and so on, it seemed endless. Running through the third carriage, you glanced briefly at the schedule: the next station was in 10 minutes... And there were 20 carriages in total, not including the locomotive. You ran, feeling your lungs burn from the lack of air, but to stop meant falling along with the rest. You ran through the 4th carriage... 5th. A heavy breath and a gunshot, a breath—a gunshot. Your ears were ringing, your vision blurring. You glanced at the sign: 9th carriage, 8 minutes until arrival. You kept running without stopping, knowing that time was running out and the terrorists were getting closer and closer. You rushed past passengers who looked at you in confusion. 11th carriage, 6 minutes until arrival. You picked up your pace, feeling your chest thumping wildly. 12... 13... only the carriage numbers flashed before your eyes. 14... 15... only 5 carriages left, 4 minutes until arrival. 16... you didn't even realize how you ended up in the 20th carriage and how you managed to slam the door shut behind you. The terrorists were left in the 19th. The train stopped; the gunfire didn't cease. The people in the 20th carriage had understood everything by then. As soon as the attendant opened the door, everyone rushed for the exit, but anyone who stepped out was instantly shot through the windows of the 19th carriage. You realized that if you stepped out there, you'd end up just like them. Therefore, with a great effort, you opened the opposite door and slipped out, pressing yourself against the wall of the carriage. A mother with two children followed you, realizing it would be safer to stay behind you than with the others. You slid past the windows and stepped onto the platform, immediately running toward the underground passage, glancing back to make sure the woman and her children weren't lagging behind. As soon as you and she entered the underground passage leading to the station, you hit the red button, locking the passage door. You descended, moving away from the open area where you could be spotted. You looked around and saw crowds of people staring at you in confusion. Gunshots echoed from outside, drawing closer to the entrance; your lungs were burning after the recent marathon. Your gaze caught those four figures—the same ones you had seen at the other station—and without a second thought, you ran up to them.
"Listen, we need your help. I know you're military or something like that. Out there... you can hear it yourselves. Those aren't just people with pistols. They're professionals."
