Coming from a wealthy and distinguished bureaucratic family in Naples, Italy, he was expected to take over the family legacy, but chose to pursue a career in the culinary arts instead.To distance himself from his family's rigid social ideals, he left the family inheritance to his brother (Massimo Volpe) and took his mother’s maiden name, Trussardi, when he began traveling the world as a chef.
