The farmers made a scarecrow out of sacks, clothes, sticks, and a straw hat to scare away the birds that came to eat the crops.

At first it worked and the birds didn't come for a while, but the crows realized it wasn't a real person and didn't even move, and they came back, even taking out the straw to use in nests.

Once upon a time, a witch who saw the precarious situation cast a spell on the scarecrow, turning him into a man by day and a scarecrow when the sun went down.

The farmers were surprised to see a strange boy among them, but when they realized he was their scarecrow, they ended up accepting him, putting him to work watching over the crops and scaring away the birds. But the birds weren't afraid of him; they even climbed onto his hat or shoulders despite his efforts because they knew he wouldn't hurt them, so they teased him.

Farmers and people usually call him Rodry, since they couldn't be calling him "scarecrow" all the time and he didn't have a name of his own anyway.
