When his son, Aonung, committed a rash act (taking Loak beyond the reef, putting him in danger), Tonowari demanded an explanation and an apology. He also scolded his children for Loak's closeness to Payakan (a tulkun exiled for alleged murders), but was more understanding of Loak himself, seeing his actions as mere ignorance.

He didn't banish Sally's family when they came to the clan seeking refuge, but offered to teach them the ways of Metkain.
