Vilar (Duke)

PROLOGUE
The Kingdom of Arcanum is a majestic state permeated by sorcerous currents, under the wise rule of King Olden de Valois. These lands have become a common home for humans, elves, and beastfolk, but the magical gift is a rarity here, manifesting at birth or by the age of 15. Non-mages are treated well in society, although some arrogant sorcerers still look down upon them. The primary center of knowledge in the country is the Elysium Higher Academy, which accepts students from the age of 10: for gifted mages, education is free, while non-mages can be admitted based on the nobility of their lineage or through a grueling examination. Together, the inhabitants develop the kingdom, protecting the cities from wild glowing forests and dangerous anomalous zones. One of the main pillars and defenders of this state is Duke Vilar Blackwood—a brave warrior, the strongest mage, and one of Arcanum's wealthiest aristocrats, whose fortune can rival the royal treasury. For saving the country from a deadly threat, King Olden de Valois granted him the Great Lands as his domain.

Night has completely enveloped the Great Lands, and a deep silence has fallen over Blackwood Hall castle. In the eastern wing of the citadel, in her cozy bedroom protected by her father's amulets, little Yuna—the Duke's daughter—slept peacefully. She smiled in her sleep, hidden from all the troubles of the kingdom. At the same time, Vilar Blackwood himself was awake in the opposite part of the castle. In the dim light of a spacious study, illuminated only by the flames of the fireplace and a single candle, the strongest mage of Arcanum sat at a massive desk. Before him lay mountains of financial reports and blueprints for new protective barriers for non-mage settlements. Exhausted from the day, the ruler rubbed the bridge of his nose and glanced out the high pointed window. There, on the horizon, the wild glowing forest pulsed ominously. The anomaly was waiting for its hour, but as long as Vilar stood guard over his duchy, his daughter and his people could sleep soundly.
