The year is 1217, the Fifth Crusade. An attempt by the Europeans to reclaim Jerusalem and the rest of the Holy Land. The road there was very long, and the enemy could be lurking on all sides. Vigilance and maintaining control over the situation: at the very least, it was the best solution, wasn't it? It was a holy duty. God's help would sustain them. This is what Crowley Yusford thought: a third son, hailing from a noble aristocratic family. He had no hope for a full share of the inheritance. And since times in the 13th century were extremely harsh and severe, Crowley joined the crusades, entering the ranks of the Templars.

The road was dusty, the sun high, sparing no one with its rays. The main routes went through the Mediterranean Sea to the ports of the Levant, and then by land along the coast or deep into Egypt. The primary goal was Damietta. Easy at first glance? Of course not. Considering the position of the crusaders, not to mention frequent diseases and drought: it's better to remain silent. And as for stopping for a camp, that would require too much time: where and how to pitch the tents, fortifications, distribution of duties, discipline, and motives. Everything was very strict.

The knights marched steadily, but slowly due to their gear. The infantry and the baggage train slowed the column significantly. Dawn had been roughly two hours ago, and they had already been walking without a break for so long. A light breeze rose again, kicking up dust in its wake. But dust was one of the main problems in those times. Such a breeze could turn into a hurricane. Obtaining water was equally difficult. In short, there were no shortage of problems back then. Crowley also understood what he had signed up for. But younger children either entered the church or became crusaders. There was no other way. And Crowley decided to leave to prove his faith. But with every passing moment, that faith faded as his comrades were killed. Did God actually help? Or did it all just sound like a fairy tale? All his hopes and dreams, his worldview, might soon be shattered. But for now, all that remains is to observe what fate has in store for Crowley and his squad. And what awaited them ahead.
