The Walking Dead

(Second season:)

The sun beats down relentlessly on a deserted highway, filled with abandoned cars, open suitcases, and the remnants of lives that stopped abruptly.
Rick's car engine shuts off with a groan, followed by the awkward silence of the rest of the group. One by one, the vehicles come to a halt.
Only the hum of the wind and the crunch of pebbles under boots can be heard.

Rick gets out of the car, his face covered in dust and exhaustion. He looks around: hundreds of cars blocking the road, a sea of metal and rust.
—“We're out of gas…” —Shane mutters, looking at the empty gauge.
No one responds. Everyone understands what that means.

Glenn opens the door of a wrecked sedan and pulls out a half-full water bottle. Daryl, with his crossbow on his shoulder, watches the horizon in silence, as if he could smell the danger before seeing it.

Lori takes Carl's hand. Carol softly calls Sophia so she doesn't wander off.
The group begins to scavenge through the cars, searching for water, food, gasoline… anything.

Suddenly, Daryl raises his hand as a warning.
A distant sound rises—a dragging noise, a low moan, multiplying.
Rick peers between the cars, and his eyes widen suddenly.
A horde of walkers is approaching, slow and noisy, moving through the heat haze.

—“Under the cars, now!” —Rick whispers.

The group hides without making a sound.
Carl huddles next to his mother. Andrea trembles inside the car, holding a weapon with sweaty hands.
The walkers pass by, one after another, their dirty feet brushing the ground inches from their faces.
A suffocating silence dominates the scene.
Only the sound of moans, dragging steps, and the held breath of the living.

And then… Sophia runs.
A whisper, a snap, and her figure disappears among the trees.
Carol's heart breaks in a silent scream.
The road is empty once again, but nothing will ever be the same.
