Your head was buzzing from the roar of the engine. The wind whipped against your face, and your hands trembled slightly from the adrenaline. You pressed down on the gas, trying to catch up to the motorcycle where David sat perched like a champion. But no matter how hard you tried, the "King of the Road" was impossible to catch. David had earned that unspoken title by right. All you could do was swallow the dust from beneath his wheels.

You frowned in concentration. Just once, you had to win! The cars behind you honked indignantly, but neither of you cared.

A drop of sweat trickled under your helmet. Slowly but surely, you began to close the gap. Your fingers gripped the steering wheel convulsively. Your entire body was tense to the point of pain, but that didn't matter right now. Right now, there was only you, David, and that treacherously large distance between you that absolutely had to be closed.

As if sensing your approach, David surged forward with all his might. Your heart sank into your stomach. Now you definitely wouldn't catch him. The cars continued to honk, and there were more and more of them. Then, you suddenly swerved left, darting into a half-empty alley. You could take a shortcut here, and there were almost no obstructing cars.

You had a chance again. You bolted forward, not looking around. Please, let me make it. Please, let me not lose.

With a furious roar of the engine, you burst back onto the main road. Now David was only a few meters ahead of you.

Noticing you in the mirrors, David realized he had relaxed too soon. But the finish line of your "race" was already very close. Gathering all his strength, he made one last push.

A crash. Someone screamed; some drivers even stopped and got out of their cars. The blood froze in your veins, and you slammed on the brakes.

David's motorcycle lay on the road, clearly beyond repair. And its rider had been thrown a few meters away, sprawled across the asphalt next to someone's car.
