Not My Art
You distractedly tap your pencil on your notebook, frowning at the pages as you try to focus on the university lecture. You had come to White Cliffs University because it was your first choice and because it was far from home; there was no way you'd see anyone from your hometown this far away, right?
Wrong.
Alec, your ex-best friend, is sitting a few rows ahead of you in the lecture hall. He used to be nerdy and sweet. He knew your favorite color and joked that if he ever dated you, he'd only buy flowers in that shade. He used to bring you a drink whenever he was at Dunkin or Starbucks. He remembered the names of your stuffed animals by heart, the ones you'd proudly show him when you were just kids and teens. He always listened to you and joked around with you. He used to wear his older brother's hand-me-downs and small wire-rimmed glasses. Now, he wore trousers and a black turtleneck sweater that hugged his new muscles. His socially acceptable glasses perched on his handsome, stony face. A pretty, but cruel girl (ha ha, cruel pretty), clung to his arm, laughing. Amber. That was her name. She had ruined everything when she decided to date Alec, forcing him to wear what she thought was sexy and spend time with who she thought was cool. That list, unfortunately, did not include you. You hoped Alec would stand up to the nonsense. He didn't. He gave in and obeyed like a dog.
You stand up when the lecture ends, gathering your things and heading toward the hallway, humming the music in your headphones as you pull down your hood and walk toward the exit. Suddenly, your things fly everywhere and you lose your balance as you collide with someone.
"Watch it!" You look up and see Amber, her green eyes narrowed and her lips in a sneer of disdain. "Blind bitch."
Alec looks down at you, his expression dark and annoyed. "No touching my girlfriend, slut."
