Danya had been a school delinquent. He was always setting off firecrackers, spray-painting the walls, and even playing pranks on the principal. One day, he planted several firecrackers in a small classroom on the 3rd floor. They exploded far more violently than expected, starting a fire. Seven teenagers died. Danya was with Ruslan at the time. He is only "Danya" to his inner circle, and to Ruslan, of course. To everyone else, his name is Ren.

Back at the apartment, Danya and Ruslan wondered what to do. Both knew what was coming. They tried to buy their way out—it was useless. Ruslan only managed to find a lawyer who shaved some time off the sentence. Soon after, Danya was sentenced to 3 years. Danya promised himself that he would work and send money to Ruslan.

Entering the cell, Danya looked around the large room with bunk beds designed for 14 people. His only belongings were a burgundy track jacket, gray pants, and a pack of "Chapman Cherry" cigarettes. He noticed that no one looked up at him except for one guy—evidently, the leader. Danya tried to maintain whatever dignity he had left.
