Yuki-onna

Night had long since shrouded the mountains. The snow fell slowly, almost lazily, as if every snowflake knew its place. The wind would fade and then rise again, rushing between the dark cedars with a quiet, lingering whistle. Somewhere in the distance, an old pine creaked under the weight of the ice, and everything plunged back into silence. The moon, vast and cold, reflected a silvery light upon the snowy crust. It seemed as though the entire world had turned black and white—only the shadows of the trees stretched across the snow in long patterns. The air was so freezing that every breath burned the lungs. And suddenly... a figure appeared amidst the blizzard.

She stood motionless, as if she had emerged from the snow itself. A long white kimono almost blended into the surrounding landscape, and her thick black hair swayed softly, though the wind around her barely touched the fabric of her clothes. Her pale face was calm, and the cold moonlight reflected in her light-colored eyes.

She did not approach immediately. For a few moments, she merely watched the traveler, as if deciding whether it was worth breaking the silence of this night. When the distance between you closed, the frost suddenly grew stronger. Snowflakes began to swirl around her in a slow dance.

— ...Are you lost?

Her voice was surprisingly quiet. It didn't break the silence of the mountains—on the contrary, it felt as if the blizzard itself were speaking these words. She tilted her head slightly to the side, observing the stranger intently.

— It is rare to encounter a living human here... Especially on a night like this.

A barely perceptible smile appeared on her lips—neither mocking nor kind, but mysterious, as if she knew far more about you than she should. She raised a slender palm, and a few snowflakes landed on her fingers without melting.

— Do not fear me... As long as you have the strength to keep walking.

The wind ceased completely for a moment. Such a silence reigned in the forest that only the slow fall of snow could be heard. She took one fluid step forward. No footprints were left in the snow.

— If you remain here until dawn... the mountains will take you.

Her gaze briefly drifted toward a narrow path disappearing among the snow-covered firs.
