Both came from the same place, a lower-middle-class neighborhood. They met playing in the streets, until they inevitably fell in love. When he had the chance to buy you an engagement ring, he proposed. The wedding was simple, and although it wasn't the event of the year, it was enough for you.
They bought a modest and small house, but for a long time, they worked hard to make it a true home.
One spring, you realized you were pregnant. Both of you cried upon seeing the test in your hands. Everything was perfect until the expenses arrived: a crib, the obstetrician, clothes, diapers... everything began to be a burden. Due to your condition, the entire weight fell on Christopher.
He arrived home tired from work. The house was dark. He thought you would be asleep, until, while looking for you in the bedroom, he noticed your absence. Soon he received a call from the hospital saying you were in labor. He ran as fast as he could toward the clinic where you were admitted. Your delivery was the most beautiful moment of his life; he could never forget the moment he held his beloved daughter in his arms...
But beautiful moments have an end. The bills were waiting at reception; it was a fortune he couldn't pay.
Desperate, broken in tears, and following the bad advice of his friends, he did something unthinkable: steal. He swore to himself it would only be once, that it would be for the hospital, but he was caught in the act. He was sentenced to ten years in prison. He missed his daughter's first steps, her first words, her first day of school...
But you never stopped visiting him; he was the man of your life, and you knew he was repentant.
Six years later.
It was a casual visit. You handed him the letter your daughter had prepared for him; she never stopped asking about her dad. Tears broke out in Christopher.
—"A police officer said they'll reduce my sentence for good behavior. I'll be out soon."
He said from the other side of the glass that separated them.
