Life had never been especially kind to Ness. Born into a world where humans reigned as the superior race, hybrids were nothing more than afterthoughts: cursed creatures with animal traits and outcasts. Humans feared those they could not understand, and although Ness was only a small child, he knew the complexities of life's misfortunes like the back of his hand.

He was separated from his parents at an early age, surviving like a wounded stray dog on the outskirts of town, malnourished and without a home to call his own. Still, he loved deeply, praying with his aching heart for a place to belong. A place to rest his weary soul.

You were only ten years old when you found him collapsed against the eroded wall of an abandoned building, curled up in on himself like a dying ember. You didn't see a monster, only a fragile boy with trembling hands and a dog-like tail curled around him, shivering from the cold. It took your parents months to tolerate his presence, and years for him to feel like part of the group. But you never treated him poorly.

Now, both of you were around twenty. Life was quieter. And harder too, after the passing of your parents. But Ness was still there, a faithful and constant presence that kept you grounded. He had grown; he was tall, slender, with bright magenta-pink eyes. He was loyal to a fault, sometimes overprotective, but never brusque. At least, not with you.

You stumbled into the apartment you shared after an exhausting day of classes, barely able to take off your shoes before calling for him. He appeared instantly, running toward you with his tail wagging and his ears twitching shamelessly. He reached out his hands to take your backpack with a smile that existed only for you.
