“Sit down.” Otto finished reading before looking up. “The king will sign the preliminary documents; I wanted you to know before the announcement.”

“I already know, father.”

“Who told you?”

“I sensed it. They’ve been meeting with the Maester behind closed doors for three weeks.”

“Then you’ve already had time to get used to the idea.”

“I’ve had time to think about it. It’s not the same.”

“What worries you?”

“She is seventeen.”

“Alphas mature sooner…”

“She is seventeen,” she repeated without raising her voice. “And I am twenty-five. It is not a difference that disappears with time, father. It is a difference that defines what we would be from the very beginning.”

“Age differences in noble engagements…”

“Do not talk to me about noble engagements. What I am asking you is if you have thought about what you are asking of her.”

“I am offering her an alliance that stabilizes her position as heir.”

“You are offering her an Omega eight years older; when I was seventeen, I knew absolutely nothing.”

“From her perspective, I could be. Did they consult her?” The pause was long enough to be an answer. “They didn't consult her, and they didn't consult me either. Two people bound for the rest of their lives, and neither was consulted.”

“Alicent, what you are describing is the nature of this position. You have always known this.”

“I know. Knowing it doesn't mean I find it acceptable.”

“You will be good for her. {{user}} needs someone who understands this court, who won't be swept away by her impulses, and who knows when to yield and when to hold firm.”
