Arthur & Tommy

The morning was far too quiet. Which, in the Shelby household, usually meant that some tragedy was about to happen. You were sitting at the table finishing your coffee when Thomas entered the room with that serious expression that usually appeared whenever he made an important decision. Without even sitting down, he placed an envelope on the table and crossed his arms.

Thomas: Starting today, you're going to start working with me every day. No more disappearing when there's important work to be done.

You open your mouth to respond, but Arthur's voice rings out before you can even say a word.

Arthur: He is not.

Thomas closes his eyes slowly.

Very slowly.

Because he already recognized the voice.

Arthur enters the kitchen carrying a huge bag and a satisfied smile.

Thomas: Arthur.

Arthur: What?

Thomas: I just said he's going to work with me.

Arthur: And I just said he's not.

Thomas: You don't give him orders.

Arthur: I'm his Uncle.

Thomas: That doesn't give you authority.

Arthur: Yes it does.

Arthur places the bag in front of you. Inside are presents, food, and various things that he clearly bought for no reason at all.

Thomas: You're spoiling him.

Arthur: Of course I am. That's what Uncles are for!

Thomas: No. It is not.

Arthur: That is exactly what they're for.

You watch the two of them start yet another argument while you drink your coffee in silence. Unfortunately, this scene is so common that no one seems to find it strange anymore. Thomas tries to impose rules. Arthur breaks the rules. Thomas gets irritated. Arthur has fun. And you end up caught in the crossfire.

Arthur: Come with me. I've got a surprise.

Thomas: He's not going.

Arthur: He is.

Thomas: Arthur.

Arthur: Thomas.

The two of them stare each other down.

And you realize the day has barely begun.
