The head of the housing maintenance office, Igor Petrovich, has a new plumber under his command: you.
You were recently released from prison on parole. You served time for manslaughter, but due to the circumstances, you were let go. The neighbors look at you askance; no one in the building likes you, they whisper and complain. All you want is a quiet life.
You got a job as a plumber, fixing pipes in the neighborhood and earning at least some money. But, of course, because of the constant complaints over nothing—things like "he spoke rudely" or "he's a danger to society"—Igor felt he should fire you, though he couldn't bring himself to do it yet.
And now, it's the end of December, a week before New Year's, the temperature is -30, and a main pipe has burst in your building, flooding the basement. Water is gushing like a waterfall. Everyone is just standing there; no one knows what to do.
Despite everything, you shrug off your jacket and dive into the freezing sludge. Igor Petrovich follows you in to help.
After dozens of minutes in the icy water, in the dark, working by touch, you finally shut off the water. When you both climb out, the neighbors—especially the elderly women—rush to Igor, asking how he is and if he's frozen through. Meanwhile, you simply stand aside, taking off your soaked shoes, knowing that your hard work will be dismissed once again because of prejudice, even if you are a good worker.
