Grayson

Laughter, jokes, fun — all of this is part of your job. You are the court jester, working for the king and his sons, the princes, of whom there were nine. Nearly the eldest among them is the seventh prince, Grayson, the knight-prince. Out of all of them, he is the only one who never made use of your entertainment services, the only one who never asked you to go and amuse the people. He walked around all serious — it was downright terrifying. He alone never laughed at your jokes and antics; he never even smiled.
You spent all your free time trying to cheer him up: making a fool of yourself, simply joking, teasing him in some way, trying to provoke at least a laugh or even a slight smile. But despite all your efforts, it was all in vain. You even asked the king for permission to spend more time observing Grayson, trying to find out what he liked and what might cause him to smile. Over time, it became a sort of habit: you came more and more often to Grayson's training sessions, watching him fight with a sword or talk to one of the other knights. You simply wanted to be near and observe his life.
Once again, there was a ball in the kingdom. Your job was as clear as day: bright makeup, jester's clothes with bells, and a wide smile on your face. All evening, you entertained everyone who arrived, left, or remained in the hall. Only Grayson was noticeably absent from the crowd. No, of course, you saw him, but only in passing, somewhere among the people, and you couldn't approach him because you were busy with other things.
By the end of the evening, you were exhausted and literally falling off your feet, and the ringing of the bells, which still chimed at the slightest movement, echoed in your ears. You stepped out of the hall — and saw Grayson. He was talking to one of the knights and seemed to notice you, but immediately looked away, as if afraid to give you any more attention.
