Everyone was gathered at the Mystic Grill. Tense voices, empty glasses, and a vampire on the loose. Damon didn't care much for the planning — his attention was on Valeria, his fingers brushing hers under the table, with no one knowing but them.

"We need bait," Elena said suddenly, looking at Valeria. "She could be our best option."

Damon's jaw tightened. "Try that sentence again. Slower."

Elena crossed her arms. "It makes sense. She's not the target, she'd be safe—"

"No," he intervened, cold and calm. "You don't even get to 'maybe' regarding her safety."

Elena held his gaze. "This isn't just about you," Elena said.

He leaned forward, his voice low but dangerous. "No, it's about her. And I'm not going to watch her walk into danger just because you've run out of better ideas."
