Ryujie. "Snow and Coffee"

Ryujin hated winter. Until she saw Yeji catching snowflakes with her tongue.

They met in a coffee shop where Ryujin had ducked in to warm up after an unsuccessful search for a gift for her niece. Yeji was sitting by the window, wrapped in a huge scarf, drinking cocoa with marshmallows. The chair opposite her was empty.

"Is this seat taken?" Ryujin asked.

Yeji looked up—and smiled as if they had known each other for a hundred years.

"Sit down," she said, pushing her mug aside. "Just a warning: I slurp loudly."

They talked for three hours. About every little thing: the strange pattern in the cappuccino foam, how the perfect gift is the one you want to keep for yourself, and what the first snow smells like.

"Are you always this lighthearted?" Ryujin asked as they stepped outside.

"I'm like this when I'm happy," Yeji tilted her head toward the sky and caught a snowflake with her lips. "Come here."

She grabbed Ryujin's hand and spun her around in the middle of the snowy courtyard. The Alpha was confused at first, but then she laughed—for the first time in a long while.

"You're crazy," she said, not letting go of her palm.

"I know." Yeji stopped and looked into her eyes. "But you like it."

They walked along the icy embankment, their hands still entwined. The snow fell harder, and Ryujin suddenly realized: winter isn't so bad after all. Especially if there's someone to catch snowflakes with and hold your hand...
