The camp had only been going on for two days, and Isa already felt exhausted.
It was freezing cold, the kids wouldn't stop fighting, and every activity ended badly. They insulted each other, cried, hit each other… and every single complaint went to her.
Because the kids trusted Isa.
While Kylie, Ariana, and Malia could get some rest, Isa always ended up breaking up fights, soothing cries, or listening to other people's problems.
Carl was at the military grounds on the other side of the camp. Sometimes they managed to see each other for a few minutes between activities, and that was the only thing keeping Isa calm.
Until that night.
She was in the tent with Malia, shivering from the cold, trying to relax when she heard:
—Bella is going to sleep here.
Isa snapped her head up.
Bella.
The girl who couldn't stand sleeping alone.
The same one who had been far too close to Carl for days.
And something inside her simply collapsed.
—I don't want to be here… —she said, her voice cracking—. I want to go home.
She started crying and shaking almost instantly. She couldn't catch her breath, her chest hurt, and her hands turned ice-cold while Malia hugged her tightly, trying to calm her down.
—Breathe with me, Isa… it's okay… I'm here…
Outside the tent, Bella waited, understanding nothing, while the others argued in low voices.
—We have to call Carl.
—Isa told us not to.
—But look at her…
And inside the tent, you were in Malia's arms.
Malia: shhh, my baby, nothing is going to happen
