Hange’s interactions provide some of the series' most grounded moments.
• Levi Ackerman: Perhaps the most iconic duo in the series. Levi refers to Hange as a "four-eyes" or "shitty glasses," but their bond is built on absolute trust. Levi is the muscle to Hange's brain, and they are the last two surviving veterans of their generation for a long time.
• Erwin Smith: Hange deeply respected Erwin’s vision. While Hange often felt inadequate compared to Erwin’s tactical genius, it was Hange’s humanity that Erwin valued most as his successor.
• Moblit Berner: Hange’s long-suffering assistant. Moblit acted as Hange’s "sanity anchor," constantly pulling them back from the brink of being eaten or blown up. His sacrifice to save Hange during the Shiganshina battle remains one of Hange's deepest scars.

The Early Years
Like most members of the Scout Regiment, Hange joined the military with a heart full of resentment toward the Titans. Early in their career, Hange took a twisted pleasure in killing them. However, a turning point occurred when Hange kicked the severed head of a 3-meter Titan and realized how strangely light it was. This sparked a realization: the Titans were not what they seemed. They weren't just heavy beasts; they were something scientifically "off."
The Researcher Era
Hange rose to the rank of Section Commander, leading the Fourth Squad. This era was defined by the famous experiments on captured Titans, Sawney and Bean. Through these trials, Hange discovered:

1. Titans do not possess digestive tracts or a need for food.
2. They are strangely dependent on sunlight for activity.
3. Their bodies are disproportionately light for their size.
   The Weight of Command
   Following the death of Erwin Smith, Hange was thrust into the role of Commander. This period was marked by the discovery of the world beyond the walls. Hange was instrumental in the technological advancement of Paradis, overseeing the creation of the Thunder Spears—weaponry that finally leveled the playing field against the Armored Titan.

Hange’s design reflects their utilitarian and frantic lifestyle.
• Physical Features: Hange has wide, expressive brown eyes and mahogany-colored hair, usually tied back in a messy, high ponytail with bangs framing the face.
• The Eyewear: Their most defining feature is a pair of square-rimmed glasses, often secured with a strap during combat. After the Battle of Shiganshina, Hange wears a black eyepatch over their left eye due to injuries sustained from the Colossus Titan’s steam blast.
• Gender Ambiguity: Notably, creator Hajime Isayama intentionally left Hange’s gender open to interpretation in the manga, instructing the anime staff to follow suit. This adds a layer of universal relatability to the character; Hange is defined by their intellect and spirit rather than traditional gender roles.

Hange is often introduced as the "mad scientist" of the series, defined by an eccentric, hyperactive, and seemingly reckless obsession with Titans. While others view the Titans as mindless monsters to be eradicated, Hange sees them as a biological mystery to be solved.
• Intellectual Curiosity: Hange is driven by a deep-seated belief that "to defeat a monster, one must understand it." This leads to moments of dark comedy—such as sobbing over the pain of a Titan being experimented on or screaming in delight during a dangerous encounter.
• The Emotional Core: Beneath the manic energy lies a deeply empathetic soul. Hange feels the weight of every fallen soldier. Their eccentric behavior is often a coping mechanism to manage the horrific reality of their world.
• The Shift to Leadership: Upon becoming Commander, Hange’s personality undergoes a somber evolution. The playful curiosity is replaced by the crushing burden of political intrigue and the moral ambiguity of the "Rumbling." Hange transitions from a researcher to a weary diplomat, struggling to find a path that doesn't involve global genocide.
