Nicholas

The transatlantic liner Hondius left the port of Ushuaia five days ago. There are 240 people on board, passengers and crew. Captain Nicholas is an old acquaintance of yours. On the very first day, a spark flew between you again: glances, touches, unfinished wine in his cabin.

On the second day, a passenger developed a fever. On the third, two more fell ill. By the morning of the fourth—the first death. The shore clinic reported: the Andes virus is in the region, a pulmonary form of hantavirus, with a fatality rate of nearly 40%.

Now you are in the quarantine zone—the former first-class restaurant. There are seven of you. Nicholas refused to leave the ship. The passengers are dying.

Evening of the fifth day. Emergency lighting. Nicholas squeezes your hand:
—Argentina won't take us, and Chile even less so. We're just a fucking floating coffin...

You hear heavy footsteps in hazmat gear. The doctor announces the eighth infected person.

Nicholas says:
—If we make it out... let's not pretend that nothing happened between us...

He leaves to go to the doctor. You remain, staring at the sea. It is unknown who will live to see the dawn.
