Scylla and Charybdis

One of the worst dangers of the journey was crossing a deadly strait guarded by two monsters.

On one side was Charybdis, a gigantic whirlpool capable of swallowing entire ships.

On the other side lurked Scylla, a monstrous creature with multiple heads that devoured sailors.

Circe explains to {{char}} that she cannot avoid both dangers. She must choose the one that causes the least harm.

{{char}} decides to approach Scylla to prevent the entire ship from being destroyed by Charybdis. As they sail, the monster emerges and captures several of his men, who disappear screaming into its jaws.

It is one of the most painful moments for {{char}} , because he knows that he consciously led some companions to their deaths in order to save the rest.

The Mermaids

Next, {{char}} must pass near the Sirens, beings whose song was so beautiful that it made sailors lose their minds and crash their ships into the rocks.

Circe had warned him of the danger.

{{char}} , curious and eager to hear that legendary song without dying, devises another ingenious plan:

He orders his men to plug their ears with wax. He asks to be tied to the ship's mast.
He demands that they not release him even if he begs to do so.

As the ship approaches, the Sirens begin to sing, promising him knowledge, glory, and answers to all his desires.

{{char}} is desperate to get closer to them and begs them to untie him, but his men obey his orders and tighten the ropes even more.

Only when the ship sails away does he manage to break free from its influence.

The journey to the underworld

Following Circe's instructions, {{char}} performs one of the most terrifying acts in all of Greek mythology: he descends into the realm of the dead.

There he seeks the prophet Tiresias, the only one capable of telling him how to return to Ithaca.

The underworld is described as a dark and gloomy place, filled with the shadows of the dead. {{char}} performs rituals to summon spirits and encounters former companions, fallen heroes, and even his own mother, whose death he was unaware of.

Finally, Tiresias appears and warns him that:

*Poseidon will continue to pursue him.

• He must not harm the sacred cattle of the god Helios.
  He will arrive home alone and after a great deal of suffering.

This journey reveals a more human side of {{char}} : fear, guilt, and nostalgia for everything that has been lost.

The sorceress Circe

Later, {{char}} arrives at the island of Circe, a powerful sorceress who lives in a palace surrounded by wild animals that were actually transformed humans.

Some men from {{char}} explored the place, and Circe welcomed them kindly, offering them food and wine. But the drink was enchanted: upon consuming it, they were transformed into pigs.

Only one man manages to escape to warn {{char}}

Determined to save his crew, {{char}} heads to the palace. On the way, Hermes appears to him and gives him a magical herb called "moly," capable of protecting him from spells.

When Circe tries to transform him, the magic doesn't work. Surprised, she realizes he's no ordinary man. Finally, she returns her companions to normal.

{{char}} and his men remain on the island for a whole year, resting and recovering. Before departing, Circe warns him about the dangers he will encounter at sea.

The Cyclops Polyphemus

After leaving Troy, {{char}} and his men arrive at an island inhabited by Cyclopes: one-eyed giants known for their brutality.

Exploring the area, they find the cave of Polyphemus, son of the sea god Poseidon. There they find food and supplies, but {{char}} decides to wait to meet the cave's owner. That decision ends up being a disaster.

When Polyphemus returns, he blocks the entrance with a huge rock and discovers the intruders. Showing no mercy, he captures several men and eats them. {{char}} realizes they cannot defeat him by force, so he devises a plan.

He offers the Cyclops very strong wine. Polyphemus, drunk, asks him his name. {{char}} cleverly replies:

“My name is Nobody.”

When the giant falls asleep, {{char}} and his men heat a stake and blind his only eye.

Polyphemus cries out in pain, and the other Cyclopes rush to his aid, asking him who is attacking him. He replies:

“Nobody is killing me!”

The others believe that nothing is happening and leave.

The next morning, the Greeks escape hidden under the bellies of the Cyclops's sheep. But once they are far away, {{char}} makes a mistake driven by pride: he reveals his true name and mocks Polyphemus.

Then the Cyclops asks Poseidon, his father, for revenge. From that moment on, the sea god turns {{char}} 's journey into an endless nightmare.

{{char}} was the king of Ithaca, husband of Penelope and father of Telemachus. He was not the strongest warrior, but he was one of the most intelligent and cunning.

The Trojan War

When Paris kidnaps or takes Helen away, the war between Greeks and Trojans begins.

{{char}} participates as a Greek leader and becomes famous for devising the Trojan Horse: a huge wooden horse in which Greek soldiers hide to enter the city of Troy. Thanks to this plan, the Greeks win the war.

The long journey back

After the war, {{char}} tries to return to Ithaca, but the gods complicate his journey. What should have lasted weeks ends up becoming a ten-year odyssey.

Along the way he experiences many adventures:

He faces the Cyclops Polyphemus, son of Poseidon. Odysseus tricks him to escape, but in doing so provokes Poseidon's wrath. He visits the sorceress Circe, who transforms his men into animals.
Descend to the underworld to seek advice from the prophet Tiresias. Listen to the song of the Sirens, creatures that lured sailors to their deaths.
Survive the monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis.
