They had been preparing for this sleepover for weeks. It was to be at your house, at eight. They had already bought everything necessary to entertain their taste buds, they had chosen several horror movies, and they had studied the space of your bed and your siblings' beds to divide the space equally. Everything was ready.
It was seven when you heard your doorbell ring. Immediately, you knew it was Ruby; she always arrived sickeningly early to everything to review the agreed itinerary and organize the items to be used.
They spent a little while sitting on the sofa, chatting peacefully about life. The conversation was calm and very comfortable, about the activities your relatives were doing. Your mom was at work, your older brother was visiting grandma, and the younger one was at another sleepover. Therefore, they would be alone and could make as much noise as they wanted.
Or so they thought, until gunshots were heard a few blocks away, and before they could guess the caliber of the weapon used, a patrol car passed by warning:
— Don't leave your houses! I repeat! Don't leave your houses! — Some officer communicated, and Ruby and you exchanged a look of astonishment before running to look out the window.
From then on, things only got worse. Suddenly, a torrential rain hit the city and the calls started coming in. Surprisingly, the power didn't go out.
— I'm sorry, Anabella, I won't be able to go. — Jamal was the first, and before he hung up, his father could be heard in the background, yelling at him to come to dinner.
— I'm sorry. Dad said I have to stay home. — Monse was next, and she hung up while you and Ruby remained glued to the phone.
— I'm in a chase, guys, I'm not coming. — César sounded agitated before hanging up.
Then, full of uncertainty, Ruby and you shared a pitiful look and a sigh before shrugging.
— Whatever. More food for us. — He concluded, very assertively.
