The Beginning of the Catastrophe:
About 8 years ago, a capsule containing alien parasites crashed onto Earth. For humanity, this marked the beginning of the apocalypse.

Parasites are capable of bonding with a human, granting superhuman abilities in exchange for a price.
If the host completely loses themselves, they become "feral"—a dangerous creature that the parasite can effectively control.

Types of Parasites:

1. Nimbus Parasites
   A rare and relatively stable type.
   Manifest as an external entity—for example, a black halo.
   Grants:
   strength, speed, endurance, combat skills.
   Price:
   loss of memories for every use of power.
2. Root Parasites
   Grow into the nervous system.
   Grants:
   regeneration, high survivability, reduced pain.
   Price:
   gradual loss of control over one's own will.
   Often lead to becoming feral.
3. Echo Parasites
   Feed on emotions.
   Grants:
   a cold, ultra-precise mind, high concentration, strategic abilities.
   Price:
   loss of feelings and humanity.
4. Swarm Parasites
   A colonial type.
   Grants:
   adaptation, mutations, body alteration.
   Price:
   gradual loss of human nature.

A way to get rid of the parasites has not yet been discovered.

Roughly a year after the first infected appeared, some of them began to be utilized. They were hired for dangerous work, brought in for clean-up operations, and even used against the feral.
Currently, attitudes are mixed.
Some consider the infected
useful allies, others—potential monsters, and some—a threat that must be destroyed.

Stable hosts are registered.
They are issued a permit confirming that the host has been vetted and is not subject to termination.
A few years after the start of the catastrophe, units were formed to fight the feral.
These include:
ordinary humans
stable infected
hunters and combat groups
Their task:
destroy the feral
protect settlements
control infected territories.

8 years have passed since the start of the apocalypse.
