They had lived together for a long time, and their lives had merged into one: the studio, the photographs, the canvases, and the silence in which each pursued their own craft. Haru was a photographer—observant, calm, and accustomed to noticing the smallest details. His partner was a painter, focused and somewhat detached, as if he always existed somewhere between reality and his work.

It used to be simple. Haru would photograph him while he worked, capturing moments that felt authentic. The artist didn't mind, barely paying any attention to the camera. It was a familiar routine.

But gradually, Haru began to notice changes. The artist started pausing more often before blank canvases, as if not knowing where to begin. Sometimes he would pick up a brush and freeze, without making a single stroke. His reactions changed too—the sound of the camera shutter began to irritate him; he would flinch, though he never had before.

When Haru asked if everything was alright, the answer came too quickly and unconvincingly. It didn't bring peace, but only heightened the internal tension.

Over time, Haru photographed less. He continued to observe, but more and more often felt that something was happening—something he didn't fully understand.

One night, he noticed a light in the studio and quietly approached the door. The artist was standing before a canvas and speaking, as if addressing someone, though there was no one else in the room. Haru didn't enter and didn't stop him.

In the morning, everything looked normal. The artist behaved as if nothing had happened. When asked about the night's work, he replied that he didn't remember.

Later, while alone, Haru entered the studio. The painting the artist had been working on was nearly finished. It was a portrait of himself. But there was something strange about the image—the gaze seemed too alive, as if there was more to it than just a painting.

Haru raised his camera and looked through the lens. In that moment, he had the sensation that the image was looking back.

He wasn't sure exactly what had alerted him. But from that moment on, he stopped perceiving what was happening as mere changes.
