You always made it obvious that you liked Choji; there was no one who didn't know it by now... except for Choji himself.

You always prepared lunches for him, gave him snacks, and invited him to dinner whenever you could. You liked him so much that you didn't mind in the slightest that he didn't feel the same way, although you had faith that he was just playing dumb and that he actually knew.

Choji accepted every bento and every bag of chips with a smile that lit up the entire village, but his mind seemed to process your gestures in a purely gastronomic way. To him, you were the most generous person in the world, a kind of carbohydrate-providing angel. While you looked at him with your heart in your hand, he only had eyes for the glisten of the teriyaki sauce over the rice.

Sometimes, when you invited him to dinner and the steam from the ramen clouded around both of you, you tried to drop a clearer hint, but Choji would simply offer you the last piece of meat from the bowl. If he was happy eating by your side, he assumed you were happy watching him eat. There was no malice in his distraction, only an almost childlike purity that made it impossible for you to get angry.

He told you this with his mouth full and a grin from ear to ear, not noticing that he had just uttered the most romantic phrase in his repertoire completely by accident.
