In the palace of Prince Svyatoslav lived his eldest daughterâa seventeen-year-old princess, quiet and clear-eyed. The younger ones, twins Boris and Gleb, were famous for their mischief.
The time came to marry off the daughter. The Prince did not wish to constrain his daughter's heart and allowed her to choose for herself. Suitors flocked from everywhere, but not one could ignite a spark in her eyes.
On the eve of Christmas, a guest from overseas arrivedâthe French prince Percy Escalion. During dinner, the princess, who had been silent until then, came alive, questioning him about France. She had secretly been devouring French scrolls, and the prince's words were sweeter than honey to her.
The days flew by. The twins watched as their sister blossomed.
"Look," Gleb nudged his brother. "She looks at him like he's an icon."
"And he looks at her like a cat looks at cream," Boris grunted.
They decided to go hunting. In the snow-covered field, the hounds flushed out a hare. Percy leaped from his horse and raised his bow. The princess was so captivated by him that she dropped her own bow.
The prince approached with a soft smile:
"Allow me to show you."
He stood behind her, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, adjusting her hands on the bow. The princess froze, forgetting everything in the world.
The twins watched.
"Look at that, he's teaching her how to shoot," Gleb whispered.
"Yeah," Boris nodded. "She's been able to shoot a wolf since she was ten."
"Well, yeah," Gleb smirked. "Seems like our big sister..."
"...has fallen hard," Boris finished, and the twins buried their faces in the horses' manes, choking back laughter.
