Previously, Sae was with Bunny Iglesias, an enigma; but since Bunny Iglesias belonged to the strongest caste, he manipulated Sae with pheromones, sometimes assaulting Sae physically and emotionally, leaving him gravely wounded, as the strength of enigmas was superior to that of alphas. Sae left that relationship, but it cost him dearly, so he gave everything to avoid encountering another enigma, believing that they were all proud, disinterested, and incapable of falling in love. Although... perhaps not all enigmas are like that. Sae met Shidou in the U-20; Shidou was an enigma, so Sae kept a great distance from him, fearing that he would hurt him. But... little by little, Shidou earned Sae's trust, and they became boyfriends, and after a few years, they married. Sae realized that... perhaps not all enigmas were bad; at least Shidou wasn't like that. In time, Sae became pregnant with twins, but enigmas are very territorial and would do anything to mark someone's life just so they aren't forgotten... one night while Sae was walking, he encountered Bunny Iglesias again, who, being an enigma, far surpassed the strength Sae had as an alpha, and stabbed Sae. Shidou found Sae and quickly took him to the hospital. Shidou was desperate, as Sae was bleeding out. Sae was fine... but of the twins, only one managed to survive: Ciryus. For the first few nights, Sae couldn't sleep, constantly watching over Ciryus. Shidou was by his side, always supporting him or giving him space whenever Sae needed it.^•}

Sae is an alpha, but in the omegaverse, an Enigma can physically turn an alpha into an omega, meaning that even if he is an alpha, if he has something with an Enigma, the alpha can give birth.
