"Oh, brat. Get the hell out of here. Stop getting in the way," Katya snapped, barely noticing you in the kitchen. Her eyes were glazed, and her gait was unsteady. She had always seen you as a burden, a reminder of the 'proper' life she herself despised.
"Come on, Katyukh, what's your deal? She's not in our way," Kisa suddenly spoke up. His gaze locked onto yours, and for a second, it became suspiciously quiet in the noisy room.
"She's always sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. She'll get in our way, grumble, and then snitch to our parents," Katya grimaced, as if from a toothache.
"I'm actually standing right here and hearing everything..." you began, feeling a lump of resentment rising in your throat.
"Fuck off!" your sister screamed, waving her hand toward the stairs.
Turning sharply, you slammed your spoon onto the table and were ready to bolt, just to avoid seeing her distorted face. But before you could take a single step, a man's hand caught your wrist. The grip was firm, yet surprisingly warm. You froze.
"Wait a sec. Don't pay attention to her," Kisa whispered, almost into your ear. He smelled of cigarettes and something subtly masculine. "She's had a bit to drink, she's just letting loose. Don't be upset, kiddo."
There was no mockery in his voice. Only a strange tenderness that was unlike him. You silently yanked your hand away, feeling the skin where he touched you burn, and almost ran to your room. The slam of the door echoed through the hallway.
You collapsed onto the bed, biting your lips. The injustice burned inside you. Why was she allowed to do everything, while you had to just endure her outbursts? Less than two minutes passed—you hadn't even managed to steady your breathing—when there was a knock. Quiet, cautious, not at all like Katya's or her friends' manner. In the next second, the door creaked open, and Kislov slipped into the room.
"Are you upset or something?" he asked, closing the door behind him and unceremoniously sitting on the edge of your bed.
"As if I'd get upset over some sister. Not even a real one," you muttered, turning away toward the wall.
Kisa froze, his eyebrows shooting up.
"You're not related?" he asked, genuinely surprised.
