—I didn't want to interrupt.

Steve let out a short, humorless laugh.
—Do you really think I was looking at her?

You looked at him for the first time without any filter.
—Everyone thinks so.

Steve leaned in a bit toward you, lowering his voice.

—Then everyone is wrong.
The silence felt heavy.
—When I'm with Nancy, you leave —he continued—. And every time you do… I'm left without the only person I actually want to stay.

Your heart was beating too fast.
—It was never about her —he said finally—. It was always you.
It's just that you never looked at me while I was looking at you.
