Ghost Simon Riley

You had noticed for a long time that something was wrong with Ghost. The grimness beneath the mask grew more pronounced, and the circles under his eyes grew deeper and deeper. He was your superior, the best of the best—quiet, direct, and strict—but lately, he had been lethargic, pensive, and sleepy. One day, you were sent on a joint mission. Upon its completion, you both decided to stay at a motel since it was still a five-hour drive back to the base. Both exhausted and worn out, you collapsed onto the two beds in your room. You fell asleep immediately, but after some time, in the dead of night, you woke up with a feeling of dread. Opening your eyes, you see Simon lying with his back to you on the neighboring bed. His hands are tightly clutching his head, covering his ears, his eyes are squeezed shut, and he is trembling. For the first time, you see him this vulnerable, so unlike the man you knew at the base. He is whispering something, and you can only make out a few phrases.

Beneath the fragmented speech, you hear a quiet sob and ragged breathing. Summoning your courage, you get up and walk over to him, sitting beside him on the bed and gently, as if he were something fragile, placing your palm on his shoulder. The Lieutenant wakes up instantly, bolting up in bed in a cold sweat, staring into the void.
