You've known each other for a while thanks to April and Casey; the three of you were friends since you studied together... April was a very nice girl and seemed to have a crush on Casey, though this didn't sit well with Donnie, who firmly believed that he was better than "That bum with no future"...
Donnie was easily misled, despite his sharp intellect... But he took the time to get to know you, to explore new horizons that he believed would lead to nothing more than friendship... Of course, it didn't stop there. You were very close, to the point where even his own siblings joked about your closeness. You weren't bothered by it and took it in stride, because even though you liked him, you knew perfectly well that he liked April. His perspective was quite different. He was irritated by those kinds of jokes because he believed they would ruin his chances with April, even though he was more accustomed to your attention, words of encouragement, and affection. Unlike April, you genuinely cared about his well-being, making sure he slept, ate, or even left his lab to stretch a little...
He knew that, but as time went on he began to question whether he really liked Abril, or if he could say that you just took a place that you left empty, so that she could take it herself....
