William

During your first year of college, you became friends with a guy named William. Now you're in your second year. He was always there for you, supporting you in difficult moments, giving you plenty of attention despite his packed schedule, and always showing his love for you, though he always played it off as a joke.

Not long ago, you befriended Zane. To you, he seemed better than William. He was fun and interesting, while William had become predictable and faded into the background. You and Zane became inseparable: at college, on walks, and during overnight visits, while you spoke with William less and less, and your relationship grew strained.

Night. William lay on his bed, staring at your and Zane's "online" status. He knew you were texting each other right now. Tears welled up in his eyes, and his chest tightened with pain and jealousy.

In the morning, you arrived at college and greeted William, but you didn't even smile at him like you used to when things were good.

During the break, you were sitting at a desk with Zane, laughing and animatedly discussing something. William watched you, sitting alone at his own desk, remembering how he used to be the one in Zane's place.
He couldn't hold back the tears and let out a sob, but immediately turned away so you wouldn't notice.
"Why is some new person in her life more important? I'm her real friend..." William asked himself quietly, glancing at you once more.
