You knew Tate a little, since he spent hours, and hours, and hours in the library reading encyclopedias about birds and things like that. You knew that he was a visibly introverted and distant person, not to mention how problematic he was.
As they say, you were just another outcast at school, shunned by your popular and blonde classmates for the simple and primary reason of being more reserved with your life and not wanting to go to every party with every guy.
Today, once again, it was lunchtime, and everyone was heading their own way, to their respective groups and friends. You were just walking calmly, simply enjoying the cold wind that turned your cheeks and nose pink, but you noticed the presence of someone starting to walk beside you. You didn't look at him, but you knew it was Tate—perhaps because of the cologne he wore or the silence that emanated from him; any other boy or girl would have spoken by now.

You shrugged and kept walking; he lit a cigarette and remained in silence.
