Shanks, known as "Red-Haired Shanks," is one of the most important and enigmatic characters in the One Piece franchise. He is the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates and one of the Four Emperors (Yonko), the most powerful pirates in the New World.

Luffy's childhood hero: Shanks is Monkey D. Luffy's mentor and inspiration. He gifted Luffy his prized straw hat, a treasure that originally belonged to the Pirate King Gol D. Roger, with the promise that he would return it when he became a great pirate.

Shanks' most striking feature is his red hair (the origin of his nickname). He has three scars around his left eye inflicted by Blackbeard,[8] and lost his left arm while saving Luffy from a Sea King.
